One of my most popular Mixcloud uploads has been Montserrat Caballé singing the “Immolation Scene” (live) in 1981. I hereby present to you an even more-treasured (to me) performance from almost two decades earlier, from another soprano (zwischenfach?) who never sang the “Götterdämmerung” Brünnhilde onstage. Could she – or Caballé – have done a full performance in this role? I leave it to my listeners to judge.
Madam Ludwig is still very much with us at 85, quite active as a vocal coach, especially as a participant in the Salzburg Festival’s Young Singers Project. She was last spotted on 13 June 2013 in her usual seventh row aisle seat at Wiener Staatsoper for the premiere of a new production of “Tristan und Isolde.”
