good job making the intro instrumental and the second song have vocals - thats super key in our opinion, let the groove begin before hitting anyone with words that could or could not vibe with the audience - lyrics are all subjective to people's perspective and always good to start without them.

we would definitely recommend that you mind your EQs and trim gain knobs a bit more. Everything in mixing is volume-related, and noticed that some of the tracks came in a bit "hot" Ex. was the "Drop the Beat" ... for us the goal of mixing is to always make the mix sound like one seamless track. The tracklist was great, but some of the textures could have come earlier, some later - but thats somewhat of personal preference. Favorite section was definitely the electro part of the mix that starts about halfway through with the Sikdope song, maybe try this stuff towards the beginning, and save the progressive big room trance stuff to build on that, since its more epic. You always want to leave yourself room to expand from the first song to the next. When you start out super epic, it sounds like you are going in reverse to less epic textures. If you had started with Talk by Sunstars, or Rush Hour, that would get things going with a lot more energy - great tracks by the way. Last note: try your best to avoid mixing intros into outros of tracks - it takes preparation and solid routine building, but its so worth it. Anyone can mix an intro with an outro, but the best of the best will know the songs by heart and the perfect place to mix for the most surprising changes and twists and turns to keep the audience guessing. Remember, take people on a journey that they have never experienced, thats how you really capture their hearts. Keep mixing everyday, We have been DJing for nearly ten years now, playing drums for 20, so it takes hard work and putting time in. Based on your description, it seems like that won't be a problem. Its all about the love for the music right? Does this help you out at all? Its all about the texture, and when you combine that with clockwise harmonic mixing and slightly increasing the tempo, you are literally building the whole mix as one solid riser to the end, like a roller coaster. Good luck! PS. So you use Mixed in Key? Do you also use Platinum Notes from the same company? Its definitely our special sauce, so that trimming that tracks is much much easier. Without PN, the gains are so vastly different from track to track, and honestly, your time as a DJ is worth much more than spending your mixing time trimming each track to the same volume level. Even EQs are volume right?

Many thanks for your very helpful and constructive feedback! This is the kind of detail I need in order to evolve and improve my sound. Yes I'm still working through some basics and am probably where you were 7 or 8 years ago. I have a lot of work ahead of me and a long way to go, but I truly love doing it so it doesn't even feel like work...just fun. =) Great thoughts around the volume issues. I have been struggling with regulating the volume of my tracks evenly and it's taking a lot of prep time that could be used for mixing instead. I'll check out Platinum Notes -- thanks for the tip on that. I'm going to take a closer look at textures among my tracks and try to mix that up deliberately (as opposed to accidentally) when I mix. I'll also force myself to really take a stab at mixing in more interesting positions of the tracks so it's not so predictable. I've only dabbled with production to this point. I have Ableton Live and some midi controllers but I haven't gone too far with it yet. I'm still trying to improve my mixing, and my wife (who is the real musician out of the two of us) is trying to teach me some music theory and all that good stuff that she learned in music school. I think I am going to need someone to mentor me through the process of producing/remixing. Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to my mix and writing up your thoughts. It means a lot to me. I am going to take your feedback/coaching and work it into my sets over the next several weeks. I've been out on the dance floor tearing it up for over 16 years but somewhere along the line I got the bug to try to mix...and now I can't seem to put it down. It's just too much fun! =) If you're open to it, I'll ping you for some more feedback once I've put together a mix that I think shows some progress toward what we've discussed. Thanks again!!

yeah! please do, I love to help other DJs be more interesting, we are just fed up with the whole black T-shirt, crew cut, pre-recorded mix wannabes that we want to help cultivate talent that has the drive and the motivation to be something more. yes! just do ableton and mixing as much as you can, thats really the only way to improve. When we started, music theory was sparse and only drumming really made sense. For producing help - have you heard of iLL.Gates? his methodology for ableton allows very minimal music theory to create some amazing pieces of music that are just in the flow. http://producerdj.com and pick up his first two workshops if you can - they will seriously change your life.
